What is Strength & Conditioning?

Strength & Conditioning (S&C) is more than just lifting weights! S&C is involved among many sports and is used to facilitate and enhance performance. Some of the activities used to enhance performance may include olympic weightlifting, speed, agility and plyometric training. A training program will be designed which varies the amount and nature of training utilised at different periods of the year to the needs of an individual and their particular sport.

How and why does it help?

To enable athlete/s to perform at a world class level both strength qualities and technical skills are needed. However, qualities will clearly vary between sports, athletes within the same sport will also have different technical and physical strengths/weaknesses and will therefore require specific interventions. Tracking of the S&C program is essential throughout the course of the year to identify goal setting and effectiveness. In addition, a well-rounded S&C programme will increase the athlete/s resilience to training and decrease the chance of injury. This is done through identifying both areas subject to over load during the sport and individual weaknesses in the athlete/s.
